Breast cancer is a prevalent form of cancer that continues to be a significant health concern worldwide. The increasing incidence of breast cancer has prompted a strong focus on developing effective treatments to combat this disease. However, it is equally important to delve into the underlying causes of breast cancer to prevent its occurrence in the first place.

Understanding breast cancer involves recognizing the intricate series of events that lead to the development of cancerous cells within the breast tissue. By gaining insights into the factors that contribute to the growth of cancer, individuals can take proactive steps to minimize their risk of developing breast cancer.

Various risk factors have been identified that can increase the likelihood of developing breast cancer. These include:

  • Prolonged exposure to certain hormones

    • Getting a period early in life, hormonal birth control, late menopause

  • Genetic predisposition

    • Know your family history of breast and other cancers

  • Obesity

  • Excessive alcohol consumption

    • Can damage DNA

  • Lack of physical activity

  • Potential impact of endocrine-disrupting chemicals on breast health

    • Mimic estrogen's biological functions

It is crucial to empower individuals with knowledge about these risk factors so that they can make informed decisions about their lifestyle choices and take steps to reduce their risk of developing breast cancer. Even small changes in daily habits, such as adopting a healthier diet, increasing physical activity, and avoiding harmful substances, can significantly impact one's overall risk of breast cancer.

By raising awareness about the factors that contribute to breast cancer and promoting preventive measures, we can collectively work towards reducing the burden of this disease and improving the overall well-being of individuals at risk. Remember, every effort counts, and even minor adjustments in lifestyle can make a meaningful difference in preventing breast cancer.

Unfortunately,  unlike 26 jurisdictions (23 states plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands) Florida does not currently offer licensing or registration laws for naturopathic doctors (NDs/NMDs). I do maintain my active Naturopathic Physician license in the state of Connecticut. I am the former Vice President for the Florida Naturopathic Physicians Association, we are working to obtain a license so consumers can recognize an accredited Naturopathic Doctor, and receive the care we are trained to provide. In the meantime, I completed my Certified Nutrition Specialist certification and have a license in Nutrition through the state of Florida. This is the license in which I work under until Florida passes a Naturopathic licensure bill.
