Why Florida Needs to Legalize Naturopathic Medicine

Naturopathic medicine is a growing, evidence-based healthcare approach that focuses on preventative care, root-cause healing, and natural therapies. Despite its rising popularity across the U.S., Florida remains one of the few states that does not license naturopathic doctors (NDs)—limiting access to safe, effective, and holistic healthcare.

What Is Naturopathic Medicine?

Naturopathic medicine combines modern science with natural healing methods to support the body’s innate ability to restore health. Licensed naturopathic doctors undergo rigorous medical training, including:

A four-year doctoral degree from an accredited naturopathic medical school

Biomedical sciences and clinical training similar to conventional medical doctors (MDs)

Specialized education in nutrition, herbal medicine, homeopathy, and functional medicine

Pharmacology and diagnostic training (in states where NDs have prescriptive rights)

Why Florida Should License Naturopathic Doctors

Legalizing naturopathic medicine in Florida would bring significant benefits to patients, healthcare systems, and the economy. Here’s why:

1. Expanding Access to Holistic Healthcare

Many Floridians seek natural, drug-free alternatives to manage chronic conditions such as:

  • Autoimmune diseases

  • Gut health disorders

  • Hormonal imbalances

  • Mental health concerns

Without licensure, residents have limited access to trained naturopathic doctors, forcing them to travel out of state or seek unregulated care.

2. Reducing Healthcare Costs

Preventative medicine is proven to lower healthcare expenses by reducing reliance on pharmaceuticals and unnecessary procedures. Naturopathic doctors focus on prevention, which leads to:

✔ Fewer emergency room visits

✔ Less dependence on costly medications

✔ Better management of chronic diseases

3. Economic Growth & Job Creation

Legalizing naturopathic medicine would bring new business opportunities to Florida. States with licensure see:

  • Increased Integrative clinics offering both conventional and naturopathic care

  • More medical tourism from patients seeking holistic treatments

  • Growth in natural health industries, including herbal and nutritional supplements

Unfortunately,  unlike 26 jurisdictions (23 states plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands) Florida does not currently offer licensing or registration laws for naturopathic doctors (NDs/NMDs). I do maintain my active Naturopathic Physician license in the state of Connecticut. I am the former Vice President for the Florida Naturopathic Physicians Association, we are working to obtain a license so consumers can recognize an accredited Naturopathic Doctor, and receive the care we are trained to provide. In the meantime, I completed my Certified Nutrition Specialist certification and have a license in Nutrition through the state of Florida. This is the license in which I work under until Florida passes a Naturopathic licensure bill.
